For those of you who know the parental units of Babsland well, you know that we are not naturally inclined in the athletic realm. We have other gifts...like blowing into instruments to make sound. (That is good lung exercise too. And my spinning instructor says I have a naturally good core which MUST be from my superior breathing skills.) In our adult wisdom, Mr. Babsland and I are TRYING hard to be physically active ourselves, and we have been trying to expose the children to sports and give them opportunities to run around and develop better habits than Mommy and Daddy. Yes, we take walks as a family, but when it comes to playing with the children we automatically gravitate to scrabble rather than soccer; crafts instead of football; playing school instead of shooting hoops. Which is why we have to resort to community organizations for help.
The children are loving them some sports this fall.
Calvin has been so thrilled to play baseball for the first time in the local "fall ball" league. He seems to have caught on very quickly to the skills of the game, and he loves all of the rules and lingo...and the uniform and equipment...and the masculine camaraderie. His favorite position is catcher, just like Grandpa.
Suzana opted for soccer. Initially Mama was kind of disappointed she didn't want to continue in ballet, but I let go of my vicarious whimsy and realized that soccer is really probably a better option. She looks so dang cute in her shin guards and comes home from her games all re-cheeked with hair tangled.

We are so grateful to those other parents who can coach and teach our children the skills that we lack. Community is so important.
